This is a beginner class focusing on using grids to help you draw any object/ image accurately. You will learn how to photograph a botanical object, change the photograph to black and white and add a grid overlay to the image.

You will then learn how to replicate the grid on drawing paper and will enlarge and reduce its size. You will then select one grid on drawing paper and transfer your drawing onto your final drawing paper.

Your teacher, Joanna, will guide you through the process she uses to produce her highly detailed graphite botanical artworks

This class is the first in a series of classes and is followed by Drawing Leaves in Graphite (booked separately)

During the session, you will learn

• Three hours of tuition, all materials and paper supplied  

• To learn how to draw using a graphite pencil to achieve a realistic outline, ready for tone and texture to be added. You will take home your photo, any paper you add a grid to, plus your clean outlined drawing.

This class is for beginners or those that want to revisit their drawing skills. You will focus on drawing leaves, using graphite pencils to achieve a realistic rendering of your selected botanical subject. 

In this class, you will learn how to draw from life and a photograph, plus learning about mark making and tonal techniques.

Your teacher Joanna will guide you through the process she uses to produce her detailed graphite botanical artworks. 

During the session, you will learn

• to draw using a graphite pencil to achieve different tones

• how to hold a pencil to achieve different mark making techniques 

• how to photograph your subject and edit it to black and white

• how to depict your chosen leaf, focusing on how a grid can help you accurately depict the outline of your subject

• to apply this knowledge and draw your own detailed leaf

By the end of this class you will have started a detailed drawing and will take your leaf and drawing home to continue.

This class is for beginners and all levels wanting to explore this medium for botanical work.

Discover the art of observing nature and bringing it to life with coloured pencils. This beginner-friendly class introduces you to essential techniques, materials, and creative confidence to start your botanical art journey.

In this class, you will:

• Work with a basic selection of 22 coloured pencils

• Learn colour mixing and blending techniques through guided exercises

• Develop your observation skills and learn to analyse colour components in natural subjects

• Look at a variety of pencil brands and understand the difference between student and artist-quality materials

• Explore how to choose the right paper for different projects

• Create a small botanical artwork using a limited palette

• Build the technical skills and confidence to complete a finished coloured pencil piece

Part 2 – Sunday 1 March 2026, 13:00–16:00 OR
Part 2 – Sunday 4 October 2026, 13:00–16:00

Building up on the previous session, you will apply what you have learnt by starting a small artwork. Coloured pencils are a slow medium, you will take your artwork to finish at home.

By the end of the course, you will have acquired technical skills and have the knowledge and confidence to complete a coloured pencil artwork.

This class is a beginner to intermediate drawing class and will focus on observational drawing. You will focus on drawing a chosen flower, using graphite pencils and a paper stump to achieve a realistic rendering of your selected botanical subject. You will learn about photographing your subject, composition, shapes, tone and textures.

Your teacher Joanna will guide you through the process she uses to produce her detailed graphite botanical artworks, in a friendly and supportive environment that is suitable for beginners, ongoing beginners and people wanting to revisit their drawing skills.

During the session, you will learn

• to draw using a graphite pencil to achieve different tones and textures

• how to use a paper stump to achieve different mark making techniques 

• how to photograph your subject and edit it to black and white

• to apply this knowledge and draw your own detailed flower.

By the end of this class you will have started a detailed drawing and will take your flower and drawing home to continue.

This is a beginner to intermediate drawing class, a prior knowledge of coloured pencils is a bonus, but not essential.

Take your coloured pencil skills further and explore new techniques to bring leaves subjects to life with depth and realism.

In this class, you will:

• Learn advanced techniques for depicting realistic leaves using traditional coloured pencils

• Experiment with watercolour pencils, embossing tools, washes, and dry pencil methods

• Explore the intricacy of colour mixing and layering to create lifelike textures and tones

• Work with the same base colours from the Introduction to Coloured Pencils class, plus selected watercolour pencils (list supplied on registration)

• Develop greater control, blending, and detail in your botanical drawings

Who can join:

• Beginner with limited or no pencil experience will be guided step by step

• Ideal for those who have completed Introduction to Coloured Pencils

• Also suitable for anyone familiar with coloured pencil techniques looking to expand their skills

During the session, you will learn

• to draw using a graphite pencil to achieve different tones and textures

• how to hold a pencil to achieve different mark making techniques 

• how to photograph your subject and edit it to black and white

• to apply this knowledge and draw your own detailed seedpod.

This is a beginner to intermediate drawing class, while a prior knowledge of coloured pencils is a bonus, beginners will be guided step by step for layering colours.

Take your coloured pencil skills further and explore how to bring this botanical subject to life with depth and realism.

This class will focus on depicting a realistic rose using a limited range of pencils. Using dry pencils only, participants will explore the intricacy of layering and mixing to render a red rose with all its colour variations. 

In this class you will:

• Learn advanced techniques to depict a realistic rose using traditional coloured pencils

• Explore the intricacy of colour mixing and layering to create lifelike textures and tones

• Work with limited colours (list supplied on registration)

• Develop greater control, blending, and detail in your botanical drawings

Participants will be working with the same basic colours used in Introduction to coloured pencils class and a couple of additions. 

Guest should bring:

• Phone, tablet or laptop as we will work from a photo (provided)

This class is a beginner to intermediate drawing class and will focus on observational drawing. You will focus on drawing a chosen seedpod, using graphite pencils to achieve a realistic rendering of your selected fruit subject. You will learn about photographing your subject and shapes, tone, and texture. 

Your teacher, Joanna, will guide you through the process she uses to produce her detailed graphite botanical artworks in a friendly and supportive environment that is suitable for ongoing beginners and people wanting to revisit their drawing skills.

In this class you will:

• To draw using a graphite pencil to achieve different tones and textures

• How to hold a pencil to achieve different mark-making techniques

• How to photograph your subject and edit it to black and white

• To apply this knowledge and draw your own fruit

By the end of this class, you will have started a detailed drawing and will take your piece of fruit and drawing home to continue. This workshop will take place in an upstairs workshop space, which is accessible via a staircase with a landing. If you have any accessibility concerns, please message us, and we will endeavour to book a downstairs space instead.

You will also be able to purchase a basic starter pack after the class if you wish to continue with your drawing skills.

Guests will get:

3 hours of tuition, all materials and paper supplied

• You will go home with class notes and a completed practice activity, your 5 x 7” drawing, and your chosen leaf to continue working on

• You will also be able to purchase a basic starter pack after your class if you wish to continue your drawing skills.

Guests should bring:

• Phone/tablet with a camera, tablet preferred if possible.

• Enthusiasm and willingness to give it a go.
